Mike Fisher first thought he had  the flu, but after a seizure and some tests, a golf-ball sized tumor was found in Mike’s frontal lobe. Although the tumor was immediately removed via surgery, additional treatment was required. Mike, a sponsored longboarder and active member of the Huntington Beach High School surf team, was diagnosed with a stage-three brain tumor. 

The community immediately got involved: Teachers offered extra credit for students going to Mike’s fundraiser; fellow classmates and friends made stickers that say, “Save Mike’s Head;” the Mark McGuire Foundation for Children made a donation; and there was a large rally at Huntington Beach High School. “Mike has a huge heart, is the greatest kid, and is a wonderful person,” said his mother, Nancy. “All of the local surfers, including the older guys, were there. Even his middle school teachers were involved. It’s so encouraging.”

Mike is responding quite well to treatment and is scheduled to return home to Cali today! His expenses are up to $120,000.00 now. Through the community and friends, they’ve already raised $66,000.00. Those interested in helping Mike continue his path to wellness are welcome to call 714.969.8981.

Quiksilver and Sydney-based designer Sam Elsom are creating a limited release collection of luxurious, hand-tailored garments for men.

The elsom collection will consist of suiting, a naval waterman coat, two dress shirts, an organic denim jean, an organic t-shirt, a belt and neck-tie. This collaboration will be a first for Quiksilver and elsom.

Members of Quiksilver’s global surf team are tipped to be among the first recipients of the hand-crafted suits with expectations of them being worn for the first time at the 2008/09 Association of Surfing Professionals World Championship crowning scheduled for February 2009 on Queensland’s Gold Coast.

The actor will appear Thursday at a screening of his film, ‘Surfer, Dude.’

Actor Matthew McConaughey will appear in Newport Beach on Thursday for a screening of his new film, “Surfer, Dude.”

McConaughey is scheduled to arrive at the Edwards Island Cinemas 7 at 7:15 p.m. to introduce the movie and host a drawing for a surfboard that he autographed.

The actor produced and stars in “Surfer, Dude,” a comedy about a surfer who must deal with a drought of waves at his Southern California home break.
